The anticipated indictment of John Bolton, the former National Security Advisor, is making headlines. Bolton was the National Security Advisor under President Donald Trump from April 2018 until September 2019. Bolton was fired by President Trump during his first term; soon after Bolton became a harsh critic of President Trump's leadership.
A complaint or indictment is expected to happen next week. Sources say Bolton improperly kept classified national security information in his home. A raid was conducted by FBI agents in September at Bolton's Maryland home to locate classified documents. Bolton of course denies the accusations although enough evidence was found to charge Bolton. Officials say Bolton should not have access to these classified reports which could possibly be leaked to the media or in the hands of foreign government. Reports claim Bolton's emails were already hacked which led to the leaking of critical information. Bolton's recklessness puts the entire country at risk for possible attacks.
If Bolton is charged, it could set a precedent for holding high-ranking officials accountable for their actions .This might lead future administrations to adopt a more cautious approach to national security, as political officials may fear legal repercussions for their negligence. As citizens become more aware of legal implications of government actions, there may be a growing demand for accountability.
