Health and nutrition is the latest centered topic of government officials. The federal program SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) which provides funds to eligible low income families for food may be taking a significant turn when it comes to purchases. Lawmakers are considering banning junk food such as soda and candy. This decision will ultimately increase better eating habits within eligible families. Some are against this change due to parents not being able to purchase party candy or cakes for special holidays celebrated. Others are concerned about the cost of healthier foods being too expensive. The good part is the banning of these junk foods may introduce new changes for SNAP recipients being allowed to purchase hot foods such as oven roasted chickens.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. who is now the U.S Secretary Of Health and Human Services is in complete support of this proposed change. Kennedy says these unhealthy foods affect academic performance and contribute to mental health issues because of the enormous amount of dyes and chemicals. While also adding how harmful it is to the physical body. RFK says we have a public health crisis in this country. Obesity is affecting young children at an alarming rate. This step of gaining control is not to hinder people from eating what they want; rather it's to provide safety measures to ensure Americans are making better dietary choices. Some forget that SNAP is government funded so technically they have the right to say how government dollars should be spent.
